Newsom could elevate an ally who’s young enough to hold that seat for decades. Or he could pick someone more likely to just fill out the term as a career capstone, and then let the many ambitious California politicians who want that spot fight it out...
(Or there’s the seemingly less-likely/ more counterintuitive approach of a governor using a Senate vacancy to get someone else who’s been inconvenient for them to vacate their current position, and create an opening there)
