Fun #GivingTuesday Fact:
Donating $ to organizations is mostly a US thing.
Most organizations elsewhere don’t even have a donate button on their sites (eg only 6 of 40+ @PeoplePowrd member orgs).
Here’s why I think they’re right AND we should still give: 1/https://twitter.com/PeoplePowrd/status/1333777906435284994 …

First, giving is good. We should all give. There are many ways to give: money, time, love, ideas, expertise, attention, etc. I’m thankful for all the ways people give!

In most countries, government provides more funding (though still not enough) for many of things that are left to nonprofits in the US: health, education, housing, culture, recreation... and even funding for organizations, so that they don’t have to depend on donations. 3/

Relying on donations to fund basic services is undemocratic and inequitable. It reinforces the power and influence of those with the most money, at the expense of everyone else. h/t

In an ideal world, nonprofits wouldn’t have to dedicate so much time to asking for donations. They could focus on their mission. That’s why I think the majority of global organizations, who don’t even have a donate button on their sites, are doing it right. 5/

And also why I’m excited to donate to orgs working to change the rules of the economic & political game, so that basic human dignity doesn’t depend on giving money:
