Are you sure the sites in question didn't just set a robots.txt that disallows the IA agent? By default that automatically purges all history when the bot next crawls it, in line with the content owner's request. Fully automated behaviour that has existed for a decade.

It doesn't purge, IIRC. The cached pages remain but aren't published.
