My essay on the modernist tug-of-war between materiality and meaning—via William Carlos Williams, Jackson Pollock, Robert Smithson, and Hugh Kenner—is now up on

Paul Valéry probably wouldn't have been a fan of the fascism debate: “History is the most dangerous product evolved from the chemistry of the intellect…History will justify anything. It teaches precisely nothing, for it contains everything and furnishes examples of everything."

My review of Christopher Clark Revolutionary Spring is just out ! « Far from being on the verge of a carefully planned coup d’état, contemporary revolts resemble the 1848 revolutions: “poorly planned, dispersed, patchy and bristling with contradictions”

Almost got annoyed at this tweet, then calmed myself with the thought that it was probably written by a young, ambitious GRU agent named Pyotr, who heads up the Media Elite Distraction Division.

why aren’t any art nerds writing their thesis on the neo-surrealist movement currently developing on tiktok

The whole conversation about AI images would be a whole lot more accurate if we just replace the word “art” with “illustration”

Don't really have an opinion on the photos, but Jerry's big spread is certainly a (welcome) harbinger of the coming backlash against "Seinfeld Drip"

David Cronenberg saying "I'm a venereal disease having the greatest time of my life" on the POV of Shivers is so funny

Mary Ellen Solt is one of concrete poetry's foremost proponents, but her major work The Peoplemover has received scant attention. In this article, I show how Solt achieves a “demonstration” of the changing life of art in 1968 #concretepoetry #maryellensolt

reading Harper’s Index as a kid gave me anxiety. had to stop. it’d be like “Percentage of bird species gone extinct in the last 10 years: 63 percent.” and I’d get really upset and try to figure out what I could do but I was 12. just ended up playing Operation Flashpoint mods 😞

I'm completely committed to art, but the now-standard defense that it "shows us new ways of living" feels like cope to me. It puts all art on the model of utopian sci-fi. Most great art has a much more oblique relationship to "life" than that.

The arts should show us new forms, new visions, that new ways of living are possible, they should catalyze dreams of different lives, worlds, experiences, ontologies; things we’ll never see, places we’ll never go. Just a song can do this. Art does play a powerful role in society. twitter.com/David_Rudnick/…

Well, after the GFC, the Fed had to keep rates really low, which made venture capital more attractive to investors looking for better returns, and, long story short, now this is what everything is like. twitter.com/ohheyjenna/sta
