Durham has a reputation of being a more right leaning university. In other universities it definitely applies. I general I don't talk about politics in real life outside of political societies.

Very true. Maybe it's an American thing exported over here by the right, though I don't even know if it's an actual issue in the USA

I think in the USA and to a lesser extent the UK there are some students who come from communities very different to the one they see on campus, often contending with people less privileged than themselves, or encountering people culturally different to them for the first time...

It honestly depends where you are. I've had it fine. You've had it okay. But you go to Durham I go to Nottingham. I've heard and seen many such things at London based universities.

It's mainly a problem with Students' Unions, rather than universities as a whole, and it changes from SU to SU.

In fairness you're not at a left wing uni and also have literally just started uni. Sussex had a few lessons on "combating right wing views"

So true, the shame however is that these dislikeable rightwingers are the ones who control the media, and gets its attention, rather than those who can actually discuss & debate humanely
