This is intellectually lazy, the woman who McCain was responding to, clearly meant ‘Arab’ in a racist and negative way. He responded to the core meaning of her ignorant comment.

What’s intellectually lazy is equating my tweet to saying McCain is racist. I clearly stated that the STORY is racist and to stop repeating it.

I would refer you to the Fox News segment where he shuts the hosts down because they associate saying Allahu Akbar with terrorism.

Just because he didn't give a whole treatise on the subject or a Seinfeld qualifier of "not that there is anything wrong with that" doesn't mean we should dismiss how important it was to be said in that climate. Get off your high horse.

Yes you can be both. Can we focus on what he did & not what he didn't do? you're missing the point of context, spin & shifting politics/elections. 2008.

Town Halls and this type of engagement are just coming back into vogue and shifting voter engagement. He didn't even join Twitter until 1 year later and is clearly trying to address this in a crowd that is booing.

like many others he's learning to adapt in this new political landscape. And you're critical he didn't choose words in the fly in a better way? Shutting down supporters is never easy and is rarely done. Sorry he wasn't more eloquent. I bet in the hindsight mirror, he'd say more.

Spend two minutes to research McCain's history of statements defending Muslims and associated ethnic groups against distortions and lies by the far right, which are plentiful, before you denounce him for failing to go far enough while defending Obama during one isolated moment.

Exactly.

I hope you actually take to heart the criticisms of your disgusting & ill-informed tweet hours after the man's death. It was a spur of the moment exchange; thinking on his feet & needed to cut it short ASAP. He also told GOPers Obama was "decent man" they had nothing to fear from

I hope you actually take to heart the idea of reading tweets w/out your own tweet-from-the-hip assumptions getting in the way. I clearly said the STORY was racist. I never once said McCain was racist. Being anti-racist means calling out racism even when it’s not convenient.
