Have you considered that the ones "misundarsting" (for me is maliciously misrepresenting but let's go with misunderstanding for the sake of the argument) are quite homogenous politicaly? Have you considered tribalism? Maybe FN? They don't apologize too after clarification ...

is it the norm? The norm in your childhood's fairytale education, sure. but out there outside the bubble? Is it even properly supported as an ideal? Some say the state has rewarded those who do not remain monogamous or strive to. See Owens, Candace, for instance.
