This is a place where libertarian left and right are deeply divided. The pessimism may be self-defeating, but I don't think it is unwarranted. It would be worth exploring, @jordanbpeterson.https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/990333082489286657 …

Why are we so pessimistic? Is it a hangover from the cold war? Is it the death spiral of the traditional media, hunting for attention in negative ways? https://twitter.com/HumanProgress/status/988170077836062720 …

What do you think of @sapinker Steven Pinker's new book Enlightenment Now and its claims?

"The Man Who Came Early", features a 20th-century United States Army soldier stationed in Iceland who is transported to the tenth century. Although he is full of ideas, his lack of practical knowledge of how to implement them and customs of the period lead to his downfall. pic.twitter.com/3zTnOZvAF4

Average conditions are better than ever, but existential risks are also higher than ever. Interconnected world spreads prosperity and vulnerability. Everything is improving at the same time, but everything could also break at the same time.

Overall yes, the world is improving but there are massive demographics paying for those benefits instead of enjoying them. It's a great book but it leaves out the perspective of a lot of people that are sick and tired with the establishment.

People care about relative conditions vs. absolute conditions; the latter is a good reminder, but did not make contact with any substantive thing people are actually concerned about nowadays. Like, no one is worried about the 2018 life expectancy.

Acknowledging progress is very valuable, the easier it is to imagine progress the easier it is to find the motivation to contribute.
