Whole word reading, implicit bias, learning styles, multiple intelligences, practical intelligence, emotional intelligence... All false and tremendously damaging.https://twitter.com/charlesmurray/status/975057995326517248 …

I take pleasure when it was a trendy idea that got huge media attention on the basis of flimsy evidence. Self-esteem, steeotype threat, etc.

Multiple intelligences exist in the sense that cognitive strengths and weaknesses dictate how intelligence is expressed. It does not mean that they are exclusive, only that they are presented according to the underlying neurological physiology/anatomy

How would you call/define an ability (or disability) to recognize as well as predict emotional responses in people and act according to them, one way or the other? Providing that a person is not a psychologist. I thought ^emotional intelligence^covers that, no?

That is a mix of general intelligence, socialisation, and personality traits like agreeablness and extraversion.

So, the idea of emotional intelligence is damaging? Is it because it's mostly used to manipulate?

My parents both spent decades teaching elem school. They saw fads come, go, and come around again. Once the district got a huge grant to try a fad called Outcome Based Education. Take tests until everyone passes. Even as kids we thought it extremely unfair. Huge failure!

Hattie, a strong quantitative researcher, would certainly agree with you. Hattie's found that statistically, whole language (.06) & matching learning styles (.23) have almost no impact on learning. As a teacher, I can sadly say, education relies far more on feelings than facts.

You forgot "grit" which was at best a reworked conception of conscientiousness or industriousness, and at worst just pseudo-scientific biz-seminar fodder. Well suited to smug corporate elites.

"False" is a bit too strong. There is a single g factor that accounts for >= 40% of variance in human cognitive ability. That still leaves an upper bound of 60% for the combination of lower order factors.
