"'People do not care whether or not they succeed; they care about whether or not they fail.' Which is apparently different." It is different, Nathan, because there are separate systems for positive vs negative emotion, as a vast psych literature indicates.https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/974468303371431936 …

“'People aren’t after happiness, they’re after not hurting.' I’m actually after happiness, thanks." No, Nathan, you're not: negative emotion hurts more than positive emotion feels good. There's a vast psychological literature making this point, too. https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/974468057321029632 …

It sounds, to me, like Nathan doesn't do a very good job of listening.

A mechanic knows more about cars than someone who simply drives one around town. Leave the psychology to the psychologist, Nathan.

One of the reasons why stock investors lose money is that they would rather not lose, than win. They will sell a winning stock quickly, but hold on to a loser in the hope that it will come back. This approach loses money over time. This is a well understood behavioral pattern.

I would assume this is why a person could hear all the compliments in the world but that one criticism... they just can't let that go.

And this is why people do in fact care about whether or not the succeed, because if they do not succeed, then they fail. Peterson's phrasing in this passage is bad.

Perhaps that is because we know failure intimately, but seldom take the time to define success. Good lesson to learn.
