Military is designed to exist as a parallel hierarchical state, on a more primitive model, designed to be activated in cases of emergency (hence 'martial law' etc.). Are we sure we really want to bridge the divide?

So you want that which you just described to feel totally separate from us? Sounds like a stupid plan to me. Us and them can easily turn into us vs them. I vote that we treat military and civilian only as us.

I receive twats from people who accuse me of raping and murdering innocent women and children. They cite smear pieces from "journalists" who have never stepped foot in a combat zone. I listen to politicians and pundits declare that our Constitutional rights be stripped. Humility?

Conversely, there are those who deify every single military member as if every single one is a "hero." Humility may be an answer, but it's certainly not THE answer. When some ignorant hipster tries to tell me about Iraq, it's difficult to be "humble" and let them spew their BS.
