The objective of many faculty members seems to be proving that students are so stupid and unoriginal that they are impossible to educate. Successful teachers are looked down upon. They are the pop stars of academia. If the students grow, the lesson is too easy.

What controls were in place to account for external factors in the productivity studies?

I doubt it's possible to account for those variables. We don't have a batch of students who's education we can move around just to test education theories.
