I had the same advice at my previous university, which was issued to all male faculty. What was I supposed to do when a female student had something personal to talk about and felt most comfortable discussing that with me? Send her to a female colleague?

I'm female & I've caught all kinds of flak for voicing opposition to that advice. I hate the philosophy behind it: "walk on eggshells around people; you must be constantly on guard for accusations" & "don't treat people as individuals, see them as their gender first"

My 15 year old daughter can't drive in drivers ed if it's just her and the male instructor. We both find this ridiculous and demeaning. There are no female licensed instructors at her school.

) always backfires. Decent men - who've never done anything - suddenly get worried about "mixed signals". So, fearful of being witch hunted, they decide it's safer to hire/mentor guys ... -
Remember the SJW who said she didn't care if some innocent men's reputations are damaged? And that was the price she's willing to pay? Well, the men who'd be the ones paying that price have decided to play it safe. And women lose out. Law of unintended consequences strikes again

In a society which has vilified men - with Misandry (hate of men) becoming the new in vogue mantra, it would be wise for men in the workplace to never be alone with women. Self-imposed Sharia law as law if you will - a tragic world for all.
