Religous texts as metaphor and allegory is not a new idea. Joseph Campbell expounded on these ideas nearly 70 years ago. I have no doubt that Sam has viewed religion in this way and it doesn't change his fundamental opinion.

Also, people at 20 want to belong to something bigger than themselves. Millennials especially. They want to fight the good fight, but don't know what to target and can't organize past a clique level, resulting in a build of resentment.
