Is it? The headline is a bit hyperbolic. Some interesting footnotes and tweaks to the Libet discussion, to be sure, but this brief review of some minor recent articles is not the paradigm breaker Herr Degen implies.

Perhaps. But it still looks a bit like Dennet’s ability not to act. As opposed to a choice to act or not to act.

The free will debate does not rest on this experiment. The important point is that unconscious mental activity precedes and causes conscious thoughts/behaviors. There is no real freedom in deciding what to think or do next

1)The sense of free will was an evolutionary adaptation, possibly advantageous to the mental health of hominids. Anyone who meditates knows brains create thought like the heart pumps blood, neither of which 'we' control. thoughts and choices have effects but there is no chooser.

2) Dr Peterson's injunction to 'carry our cross' is ultimately the same as accepting this fact beyond merely concept ('Thy will be done'). Then everything is seen as the universal will, and we are as Shakespeare said, 'players'. Any fear or resistance around that is our 'cross'.
