My advice: Ask your boss what you need to do to get the promotion/raise. If they tell you, do it. If they say it's impossible, you know that, too and can look elsewhere. It gets your manager thinking about how to help you get where you want while showing respect.

Of course. Good HR manager should indeed approach shy and agreeable employees if its for the benefit of the company. That's part of their job, so why wouldn't they? I guess not every HR manager is good?
