        The dog isn't acting with respect to an unknown future appearance, but reacting to the emotional low they have learned they will feel minutes after these things happen.

        Scientists have been saying 'animals don't have X' for years. It's far too soon to be confident that this time, they're right. E.g. I recall dogs recently passed the mirror test because they replaced visual with olfactory mirrors.
