Dogs sometimes say goodbye.

This behavior is likely purely instinctive/adaptive. There is a video on YouTube of a squirrel trying to “hide” a pecan in a dog’s fur coat. Obviously the squirrel isn’t thinking how to retrieve it later.

Seems like monkeys can think in processes but do not perceive themselves as a part of a bigger process

Dunno if uniquely human, do animals with the ability to strategize also show no realization of the future? I.e. Orcas, porpoise, crows?

Maybe squirrels burying their nuts as a supply ofr the winter is comparable. Although it's questionable whether they do it because of instinct or because of consciousness.

I wonder how many animals forego feeding themselves before feeding their young. Or, how many would lead a predator away to save them. On it's most primal level, the perpetuation of the species as a biological initiative leans in favor of selfishness over selflessness.
