Here is the hidden logic: There's often an understanding that there are biological underpinnings, but it is rhetorically weak to argue on their basis alone because it undermines the framing based on individual rights: IE, an individual should have the right to expression etc etc

There is a concern that by focusing rhetoric on biological essentialism, it shifts the discussion away from the more politically fundamental question of rights. Also, since science is constantly challenging and changing the state of knowledge, biological essentialism is quicksand
