Mostly because the Germans were so damned good at keeping records. In _Ordinary Men_ they knew the number of dead to 5 sig. digits. The Soviets don't know it to 1. The accuracy is +/- 10's of millions. Something about that makes it "just a statistic."

I think it's obvious. Axis has lost to allies. Good guys(US) would never fight alongside completely evil guys, aren't they? This would damage the narrative.
