  ”Tell the truth” has a lot of wriggle room. Some media does tell the truth, but is highly selective about what truths they tell. ”Be honest” is a better formulation.

  *knowingly withholding the truth is the same as lying. JBP is implying that when you first start trying to tell the truth, you might be too much of a novice to even know what the truth is. So at least don’t lie.
