Ok merit is crucial, but isn't it also part of the Christian tradition to extend generosity and charity to others? Granted, not as forced upon us by the state, but coming from within the individual?

Could ancestors of white Europeans not recognize that within their lineage, there are perpetrators of racial crimes; shouldn't they aim to make amends? Is this not moral? You can certainly balance merit AND diversity.
