As an atheist I still see benefit to some biblical stories. For ones that have/need belief can we excise bad parts and start religion over?

That's the issue. parts condoning slavery are bad now but morality 250 years ago said otherwise, and what will be dif 250 years in future.

Lots of people used bible as moral justification for slavery an still use it to discriminate against gays now. Condoms are still a sin today

Morals change over time even within the church, they just change interpretation of 2000 year old words to try and justify today's morality

Catholics, Protestant etc all interpret the same book/words differently so who's "right" is all subjective based basically on who raised you
