People think that the purpose of memory is to remember the past. That's not the purpose of memory. The purpose of memory is to extract out, from the past, lessons to structure the future. That's the purpose of personal memory.pic.twitter.com/TGue1L9zxM

So, you're done with a memory when you've extracted the information that you can use to guide yourself properly in the future.

If you have a traumatic memory, for example, that's obsessing you, if you analyze that memory to the point where you figured out how you put yourself at risk, you can determine how you might avoid that in the future. Then the emotion associated with that goes away.

Emotions are a often nothing more than a personal connection to a certain (personal) memory I think. That's why it's so hard for people to be objective most of the time… we always tend to connect a personal feeling to something regardless of what we want.

What about if the traumatic experience happened when you were a child - and you can't process it. What kind of impacts is that likely to have later?

I wondered if there was an organic way as opposed to structured timeline with this process. Certain traumatic memories become easier to unpack with perspective that develops over time.

What is it called if I've analysed and understood the trauma and how its applicable to the future, yet still become infuriated revising this trauma and still somehow feel attached despite a semi transcendental realisation? I hope that makes sense, it's something I struggle with.

How does one unpack childhood trauma? If the child did nothing to put themselves at risk, what do they unpack?

Good question. Often they realize that they were not responsible decades later.
