  I suppose a part of the issue is that efficiency hasn't always come with environmentally or worker friendly side effects. The giants of industry seeking efficiency and cost reduction has often been a race to the bottom being combatted with less money and influence.

  Increased efficiency ~= deflationary environment, I believe is what Jeff is after: Inflation = high time preference, buy shit you don't need just to get that burning cash out of wallet. Deflation = low time preference and think smarter about purchases and investments.
