Read this by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff. And beware. This is a positive feedback loop. They can rapidly spiral out of control. @JonHaidt @glukianoffhttps://www.persuasion.community/p/haidt-and-lukianoff-the-polarization?r=p8ptz&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source= …

I'm so sick of this. Just because the person who organized the protest to stop the tearing down of a statue was a white nationalist, doesn't make everyone against removing the statue also a white nationalist if they defend the protest.pic.twitter.com/UygUrUEii7

In the context of it being a hoax, the ambiguity prevents clear categorization. That's the point he's trying to get at. It aligns with how ambiguity and extremism play off one another, social loneliness also does this, reinforcing it by interpreting ambiguity as hostile.

Increasing political polarisation is driven by the 'like' & 'retweet' functions, which push people's social media timelines to the extremes. Question for me is whether pluralism is feasible without a centralized source of info to hold society together?

I think their take on the "very fine people" is still not accurate. And the monomania diagnosis is also perhaps misinformed. I guess I need to do a thread on this.https://twitter.com/verostophenes/status/1454164960066490370 …

I think Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff, both of who I highly respect and recommend their book, still offer an inaccurate portrayal of the Trump Charlottesville situation. So here is my fact-stuffed thread to help rectify that. 🧵

I feel like this happened before in the lead up to WWI and really didn't cool down until WWII when everyone in Europe collectively had enough of fighting for decades, if not centuries between each other. Yet the fuel for conflict seems to be keeping this going now? Why?

I know the article blames certain social media features, but there seems to be more to it than that. People can only fight for so long before they tire of it.

I just back from a wonderful evening drinking Gewurztraminer and eating "foie gras" in the forest looking at the night sky, so I will be brief.
