Claire this is interesting but optimistically misses the issue of state power and the tendency of the state to become corrupt regardless of the relationship that the people believe they have with it. Those who govern Australia now know little of Bentham and Mill.

Also a system that allows this kind of oppression and tyranny is a useless system. Even if the political climate shifts after the pandemic, this will likely happen again, there are no mechanisms to prevent it.

I also hope you are right. My history is rusty, but once things tip this far it isn't solved by a few votes. Regardless of how special and progressive you may think the countries history is...

Not sure I agree with
@clairlemon, there is equally a historical connection to the state viz. being a former penal colony that plays a role. And, to suggest less corruption as a result of being a colony and the influence of JS Mills & co., that is a stretch.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I predict the power of the state will continue to consolidate. Australians in power are no better than other humans in power. The only difference is that the citizens will cheer it on, similar to here in Canada.

Australia emerged with imperial government strongly and competently in control, slowly granting more self rule. It’s an elitist society where government is admired as inheritors of traditional values. A Canada without a Quebec and populist US next to it to disrupt it

Huge holes in this piece... the new settlers looked to the kind benevolent Government to "give" them undeveloped remote land. How did the govenrment acquire this land?

If Australia is as bad as it seems, then isn’t it kind of irrelevant, right now, how you got there?
