What am I missing here? in humans, it is males, not females, that have high fecundity surely? Women can only produce 1 child a year, men can produce hundreds (if they have access to enough women). So the premise makes no sense?

What you’re missing is that in a monogamous relationship the woman is much less likely to conceive numerous potentially unwanted children in the absence of a dedicated caretaker — namely, her husband
