I think the issue is that JP sees changing the world as so complex that anyone who dares to try it must be crazy, or power mad, or looking to tear down what works for the sake of it. His heart is in the right place, but he isn't thinking long term through the issue.

Even in Eastern cultures that are more communal, the way you achieve communal cohesion is by having individuals hold themselves to an individual ideal that corresponds to a communal commitment. Chances are you will have way more influence over yourself than you do over others.

While this is true, context is important. Someone in 1930/40s Germany could have said the same. Or Mao's China. Sometimes it is the world. It's important to know the difference and not always simple.
