Of course. Our history has stripped many minority communities of opportunities that available to the rest of us. We dont live in a true meritocracy So the hope is to guarantee space for minority groups (who have merit) so they dont get edged out by those with more opportunity

You would have to believe that merit was ever a consideration to begin with in order to suffer under the idea that it is now lost.

I say this as a theoretical physicist and pretty good at math myself. This is written by people who mistake exams and memorization for quality learning and education. Courses, rigorously taught and graded give a MUCH better measure of real learning than test.

Fun problem for Asian students coming to the US: Write a five paragraph essay in English. American students with a >1200 SAT can do it easily. This is a basic item learned in 9th or 10th grade English. I'd be interested to know how many can do it.
