Generally it's good to have this sort of "count your blessings" thing as a way to gain perspective--but you do need sometimes to just bitch and feel sorry for yourself otherwise you're trying to make yourself not own up to what you in fact feel through a form of inhuman denial.

IMHO, all that you really need to do is to focus on your own self development. That way, you don't have to feel insecure about what others achieve in their lives. Or even if you do feel some degree of envy, you don't harbor any feelings of resentment.
