        I don't think viable variation is random - it can only occur in pre-determined ways due to finite amino acid & protein sequence dependency. If the mutation doesn't support an actual protein, no viable alternative comes into existence to be selected against.

        I still don't understand how viruses are so "motivated" to proliferate-- or why we speak in such terms. It seems like blatant anthropomorphism.
