I found much of his work to be unrelatable, because while, I too, have been accused of bigotry by my students, I was never ousted from my tenure, nor am I secretly an African-American.

The denouement of American Pastoral is a master class in psychological implosion. The Human Stain prophetically upgraded 90s PC cult programming to 2015 proportions. The Ghost Writer hauntingly resurrects the Holocaust in the milieu of turgid academia. He should be read.

Which ones did you read? I read "Sabbath's Theater" because I heard it was his masterwork. It had a lot of negative zeal to it but ended in such a bleak and depraved place (like I knew it would). Of American authors of his generation, I much prefer Cormac McCarthy.

I heard his other books are better though.

Roth’s short story, Defender of the Faith” is, in my opinion, a must-read and seems more relevant today than the first time I encountered it nearly 30 years ago.
