North Koreans probably idealize 'freedom', capitalism, the western world. East germans did before 1989. Any society is based on hierarchy&exploitation. Only stateless communities are materially egalitarian, but also invite freeriding.

Doesn't mean all societies are the same, though. Private autonomy ('legal freedom' of contract) based on property rights and legal personality, is a civilizational achievement I would not want to give up. But decentralized existential power games go on within that as well.

Haven’t watched the whole podcast yet, but that 2 minute clip is shocking enough!! Perhaps this is one of the biggest problems, that many people don’t really have the time to think about simple concepts, like freedom etc, or educate themselves and their families, as survival is
