Had split parenting. It only works if there is an underlying respect or agreement between the two parent parties. For my situation, it was a living hell of juxtaposed ideas and greatly varying expectations.

They never trashed each other in front of us. But my father moved 3,000 miles away and completely checked out on being a parent. Both my brothers are bi-polar with substance abuse problems. I've had lifelong depression. Our parents have never owned up to any of it.

My parents split, didn't see my mom from grade 2 until 8. She tried to fix the relationship, but I still never forgave her. She then screwed me over in grade 12. Never forgave her. Kept my distance. Now, I'm a solo Dad, mother left town.

I'm so sorry for you. On behalf of women and mothers, just wanted to say we're not all like that! Must be hard to recognize a loyal hardworking honest woman if you never had one to role model from, but we do exist. Good luck with your parenthood and congratulations.

The thing about paying a price is the payments never seem to stop. Diminish, perhaps, but never stop.

Curious how you regard this. Do you feel it's worth considering what price one (one's self, in this case) truly may have paid for parent's missteps or do you consider it an example of embracing a kind of victimhood/failure to OWN one's own circumstances as product of broken home?
