One wonders why a commencement speech that has a message about either suffering (inescapable) or the need for gratitude (crucial to personal meaning) needs to have that message edited out.

-
We can't for even a second suggest that people's suffering isn't an excuse to claim perpetual victimhood and an obligation for others to give them stuff to make up for it.

This is, IMO, too simplistic a response. Perhaps it might be prudent to know what understanding there is between the school admin & the student. Has the student agreed to give the edited speech? And if they then do not, what message are they sending about their integrity?
-
Is not teaching a young adult about working well with others, and understanding their perspective, equally, if not more important than, being in a position to "stick it to authorities"? What message are you sending, given your platform, to this young adult?

We have to be punk rock about gratitude now?

My mother told us to be grateful when we complained. I did the same sometimes with my own kids. It’s a wonderful coping strategy that makes you think of others. If you are a super wealthy kid, might not be the best, but otherwise valuable.
