I would recommend The Tyranny of Meritocracy by Prof Michael Sandel. He raises many really good points and the idea of Meritocracy is flawed. That doesn't mean the idea of merit itself is wrong. But, perhaps we need to relook at values within society.

This in no way advertises equality of outcome though - which is a ridiculous concept. It's more just to acknowledge some problems with the meritocracy model.
