The main theory for this is that a dominant disease prevents others from taking hold due to triggering millions of peoples immune systems. It's why there is usually one seasonal dominant strain of flu rather than multiple.

Also, transmission reduction measures such as masks and physical distancing is very effective against the influenza virus.

The way I see it, If flu hospitalizations are down then COVID hospitalizations should be too. Of course it’s much more contagious according to the CDC, however, we shouldn’t see an increase in cases in states where lockdowns are taken far more serious.
