ie, is the higher negative outcomes for children raised by single mother due to a single parent effect (increased stress, financial issues, less time spent with kids), or is it something about single mothers in particular?

This is the fundamental cause of poverty and crime. It takes a man and a women, although there are exceptions to raise well adjusted children. The data shows this in many different studies. At some point you have to make smart choices.
