What do you think would have happened to all these antiquities if they hadn't been noted as valuable by the very culture that established museums?https://twitter.com/Quillette/status/1375613731040763908 …

The Elgan marbles would likely be exactly where their pals have been for a couple of millenia...on the Acropolis

And burned away by smog and pollution. Like the ones the Brits didn’t buy.

Probably filler for the foundations of a parking lot. But you can have too much preservation, many cities preserve large swaths of touristy old buildings and therefore dissipate their cultural energy to the peripheries.

For one thing the natives would have kept their heads instead of having them appear in the colonial museums. Is that what you mean?

They would have still been in countries which they were stolen from. This colonizer mindset that the West “knows” what’s better and that the people who created that art didn’t know what they were doing is one of the most contemptuous attitudes of white supremacy.

You mean “what would have happened to all these countries’ national treasures had they not been looted by western powers during the imperial era”? Well I imagine they’d have stayed in the place they originated for the benefit of the native culture, Doc

Like that fantastic jade Buddha in the Grand Palace, Bangkok. The Thais defeated the Laotians then took it just to rub it in. And a million other objects and events just like it.

They’d all be destroyed. In the private collections of billionaires. Or on the shelves of Chinese state governors.
