It's a mystery why so many who identify as Darwinists seem to forget that humans are animals and are driven by instinct as any other animal.

Darwinism is falling out of favor. The woke hates it. If we use Freud's definitions of psyche agent categorization, the id, ego and super-ego, the woke they've decided only the super-ego is relevant. Human instincts should be suppressed with the use of drugs and social control.
