Even as a kid I thought it was pretty self-evident that it was a man's place to be disposal watching wildlife documentaries where males would charge towards the frey as females escaped with the children. How do adults not get this?

For a numerous society, men are disposable as we need a lot more women to keep a steady number in the population. Yet, for the individual male this truth of disposability is very uncomfortable. As a boy, one day you realise "women and children first" will exclude you as a man.

Yeah, the article ignores one clear reason: women are protected by men since they are considered property.

Nope. People don't willingly put their lives on the line to save their property, they don't put their property in lifebotes while remaining on a sinking ship. Women and children are protected because they are deemed (evolutionary) more valuable and more important.
