"Sensible left" seems mostly personally conservative (family values), socially libertarian supporting social spending. Prime diff, from my perspective, with "conservatives", is the fiscal role of government. And the new centre right seems very open to differing viewpoints.

Something I learned a long time ago, friends will always betray you behind your back , but enemies will do it to your face.

Unfortunate friendships you held. But you're not wrong...in the case of bad friendships. Real friends will never betray you...they might end a friendship for whatever reason, but shouldn't betray you.
