Making people worried makes them want to keep the channel on. So its not so much an increasing number of options thats the cause but rather each channel having to up its dosage of fear in order to keep people watching.

Yes, and decline of traditional religions which help us to purge feelings of moral guilt. Without confession, atonement, etc. we cannot expunge inherent human guilt and therefore feel deep down that we deserve to be punished.
