River pollution saddens me more than all other types of pollution for some reason.

For me it's because so many companies set up beside rivers and used them as a cheap, secret, easy way to dump their production waste. Cut costs, boosted profits, nobody the wiser for years or decades.

I've read that N. America had terrible smoke pollution because of the dense native population's cooking fires. But then European diseases killed off the majority, and later immigrants found a vastly less populated continent.
