Dead on. The socialists in the UK in the early twentieth century used such tests to equalize the socioeconomic playing field. Effectively.https://twitter.com/clairlemon/status/1106001946656141312 …

The view in the US that standardised tests are used for the benefit of elites has it precisely backwards. Passing high & objective academic thresholds is often the ONLY way people from disadvantaged backgrounds get to transcend their environments https://quillette.com/2019/03/13/standardized-testing-and-meritocracy/ …

I would 💯 agree if I knew that all children were getting the same amount of funding for education. They are not in America.

Elites use money to get better preparation for the tests. In any case their money makes the difference. The good news in this for the poor dude is that if you're smart and capable enough, the test should benefit you.

It’s worth mentioning that even most legacy applicants are rejected from elite institutions.

lol. I guess JP hasn't seen that rich people just buy themselves into the best schools yet on the news. He's still under the delusion that we have a meritocracy. Not a meritocracy which means capitalism has no merit to it either.

Great comparison there, friend. I assume that the formula would hold such that school scandal:capitalism::Venezuela:socialism?

looking at it in a vacuum, sure, it worked historically. It doesn't really work now, as the way school is taught is based so thoroughly around these tests that oftentimes little is actually learned except how to take a test. Can't remember a bit of my geometry education.

The demand for literate labor, and cognitive labor grew after electricity was harnessed. Progressives have accelerated ongoing trends artificially sometimes, but they like to tell the story as if they were heroic crusaders smashing unyielding wickedness to liberate the poor. :)
