Since we're talking about books, and since I highly respect and acknowledge your intellect , may you recommend books that help meek shy introverted people gain more backbone? Not necassily directly but in anyway even if a little?

I remember reading this in high school. One thing that sticks with me is how, as an old women, the main character tries so hard to maintain her dignity and authority. Yet her children patronized her while rolling their eyes, and then growing forgetfulness kept proving them right.

The pathos of the human condition really bit at me in those parts.
