I'd be very interested to see such research in the form of a review paper. But the question to answer needs to be the simple "what predicts profit?", otherwise prior info (prejudice) will skew any result!

Unless the study is based on physical evidence or the statistics with a physics rated significance it is correlation to causation, although all natural stats are coorelations. I do agree with your summation and doing such would provide a clear path to falsify or validate.
