I'm old enough to remember when Google was a new company - and all they had was a search engine. They weren't evil back then. I remember that they were seen as a force for good on the Internet. Perhaps it's true that power corrupts.

I remember getting excited as they released new products such as Gmail, and that home screen that never really took off. Little did I know they were becoming so dangerous.

If they are willing to do this to appease 21st Century China, is there any doubt that they would have done Exaxtly the same thing had they lived in 1939 Germany?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Last I checked, piety across the board has led to more demonstrable suffering in the name of opposing evil. See 'antifa', 'blm', etc, etc

...but...but...but... Google is a "private company". Wrong, they are an evolved form of government; a government that we did not vote for. And, a government that knows too much about our most sacred spaces. Merry Christmas. Great post

Google is under public control. Buy enough stock and you can direct Google. Google makes tools. Modifying a tool to be safer for the
market is a fine idea.
Governing behavior is not what Google does, (not counting the directly employed). Google's motive: Create
from tech. -
I appreciate your perspective--as a matter of "under public control". So the suggestion is to vote by buying control. What % does the current BOD & Alphabet leadership control? Alphabet has vid leaks that demonstrate they seek to alter behavior and control political outcomes.
-
Alphabet has video leaks that confirm they are a corporate body doing their due diligence to make as much money for shareholders as possible. The only vote you have in a purely capitalist, free-market system is to vote with your bank. Money is a fine measure of one's competance.
-
I wish, but Capitalism quits working when a monopoly is large enough to buy or quickly squash competitors...and they do both. Record lawsuit awarded against Google in Europe for doing such. And then, there is this video that sickened many shareholdershttps://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/09/12/leaked-video-google-leaderships-dismayed-reaction-to-trump-election/ …
-
Do we have powerful transparent institutions to regulate these behemoths? Really these bureaucratic monsters work together to find a solution to universal problems that are equal parts political and market based. If people can speak freely and see the leaks the system is fine.
-
FTR: Concerning Google as an oligarch in lock step with Establishment. I never said that the solution to intrusive government is "more government"-yet. Foremost ppl ought to support those who are moving to expose corruption, which is why I jumped on JP's post in the first place.
