It would certainly be taken that way by many people. I get the argument JP is trying to make but I'm pretty sure that the moral outrage being deprived would simply switch to self righteous grandstanding, which isn't a whole lot better when based on a false premise.

It might be the best thing for himself and his family to step down, and it’s worth considering. It might be best for the country moving forward depending on how well he could articulate the reasons for stepping down. Self responsibility is what JBP sells, this is inline with that
